2012 OPA Meeting and Awards Dinner Photos

A well attended Racer's meeting at the Seaview Resort took place on Saturday afternoon just prior to the OPA Awards Dinner held at the Oyster Creek Inn and Boat Bar.

Discussions at the meeting were on the upcoming 2012 racing season and the new changes being made to help make the events safer for everyone. On hand was Rick Felson insurer of OPA Racing Events and provided a great deal of information and explanation of coverages.

President of OPA Racing Ed Smith spoke on improvements and changes to the OPA Racing as we know it. One key note is the YELLOW flag has been removed. Now should there be an incident on the course a RED flag will come out and all boats will report back to their milling areas for a restart. They shall remain there until the incident on the course has been cleared. Boats will then be restarted in the position they were in at the last time they past the Starting Line under the green flag. This keeps any divers and rescue volunteers safe during their operations in and out of the water.
Also OPA will increase the amount of their own TRAINED Divers that will be at every race and will be familiar with everyone's boats should a rescue be needed.

Bruce Johnson "Head of Safety Ops" took the podium to encourage everyone to have their air tanks and regulators inspected and tested. Encouraged members of all types of boats to take the dunk test and encouraged the people that know the other teams that come and race from other organizations to step up and do the same.

On a final note Ron Polli announced the VICCI sponsorship for 2012 and advised the west coast group POPRA will be adding the OPA World Championships to their schedule.
POPRA has also an open invitation to their Lake Havasu Race in the Spring to all OPA members that can make it out west to support them.

The Awards Dinner was additionally special. It was in honor of Augie "The Godfather" Pensa. The entire establishment was decorated by the Twisted Sisters with all sorts of memorabilia of the years of racing with "The Godfather" . The stories everyone had to tell about Augie were priceless ! This ceremony should have been recorded it was that good !

Congrats to all of the teams especially Bob Teague & Paul Whittier of AMSOIL Racing Team for winning the National/World and Over All High Points Championships which honors them with the Stuggots Cup as well as Ed Smith of Cleveland Construction for being honored with the "Godfather Award".

All National Champions were awarded Team Racing Jackets by the OPA and as a special gift from Sharkey-Images.com, Custom License Plates were made for all the National and World Championship Teams.

Another well attended Boat Show this weekend in Atlantic City !
Although this show has changed quite a bit over the years, the most notable being there were no Hi-Performance Boats other than a select few race boats promoting their organizations. The days of Outerlimits, Cigarette and others attending the Atlantic City Boat Show are long gone to say the least.
The show still brings in the crowd and is more geared towards the family boating and even some sail boats were on display...

The NJPPC Winter Awards Party kicks off the 2012 Season at the newly renovated Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City !

The party was well attended and many were honored with awards for their 10 year Anniversary with the NJPPC as well as Powerboaters of the Year awards going to Bob Christie & Family and Greig Lutz & Family.

The NJPPC is looking forward to coming back to the Golden Nugget on June 22nd, 2012 for the top 10 rated Poker Run by POWERBOAT Magazine.

2012 New York Boat Show & More

I ventured into New York City yesterday to attend the NY Boat Show.
People I had spoken with all seem to be having a decent show and some boats were selling. Providing I was getting solid information, I would venture to say that the market just might be starting to make a turn...
It may not be a hard and fast turn, but at least it appears to be making a turn. Hopefully it stays the course.

The size of this year's show had to have been the smallest I have seen yet! Word on the street was space was available and special offerings were being made. Just looking at the size of the Formula Booth and you could see they took advantage of every inch given to them....

I purposely came in late on Saturday to avoid the possibility of a heavy crowd. Tough to get photos when the show is too busy.

Miami to Key West Coverage Highlighted on Forum

A pleasure to be working with TJ Bailey of Boatfreaks.org.
For over the past several years Boatfreaks.org which has been a major sponsor of Sharkey-Images.com. During the final peak of the boating season with the Championship Races and Poker Runs rounding out the year in the south, TJ monitors the viewer traffic that is being brought in with the exclusive photos that are posted by Sharkey-Images.com to the forum prior to other media sites and each year he sees an increase in new members joining Boatfreaks.org to come view the images. When asked if the exclusive photos is making a difference TJ's response was, "Oh yeah ! It's working !!!"
Sharkey-Images.com provided the first images of the brand new Doug Wright 30 hull that will be racing XCAT Class overseas to Boatfreaks.org which many people were anticipating its debut. The first images were shot in the dark at 2 AM. Many people hadn't known it had arrived but Gary Ballough assured Sharkey-Images.com that the boat was to arrive that night but very late and that Sharkey would have exclusive access to the cockpit of the boat in the morning.
When Sharkey approach Gary the next day he stated," I guess you're ready for some pictures ?" Sharkey replied, "The images of the outside have already been taken earlier this morning and are already posted online at 7:45AM for all to see, but now I need the cockpit shots." Hudson River Fun Run Benefits Make-A-Wish

For an unofficial Run, by the end of the day there was $600 raised for Make-A-Wish Foundation.
There were approximately 25+ boats and a few PWCs that gone out for one of the final days of the season. We left from Stony Point Bay Marina and met up at the Steel House for a Buffet style lunch and worked our way back to Stony Point, NY to round out the day.

Arrangements were made to have the Chopper land at the marina so little time was lost for travel.

Not a cloud in the sky the entire day and temps were in the 70's.

A great day all the way around.

According to the event organizer Anthony Rogosich, he would like to turn this into a full "Official Poker Run Event" next year to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation

Move Over Awareness Campaign

Pictured below are the mother "Donna Setaro" and brother "Nicholas Castellano" of fallen NJ State Trooper #6397 Marc Castellano whose Date of Last Patrol was June 6th, 2010 when he was killed when he was hit by a car while investigating a crime scene on the side of a highway.

The "Move Over" law was enacted in 2009, and requires drivers to move over a lane when approaching an emergency vehicle on the side of the road.

Donna Setaro is now on an Awareness Campaign for the "Move Over" law.

Win Some and Lose Some

Welcome to the Golden Nugget !!!

I have been very fortunate over the years shooting this event.
Something about this year's event wasn't feeling quite right.
I started off early at the Marina only to find one boat launching.
I made my way to a Committee member's house where a few more boats had been tied up.
The weather was looking a bit sketchy and that was when I was informed that the Helicopter wasn't able to take off due to severe weather conditions in their area.
That sort of set the stage for the entire weekend.

I needed a Plan B. I recalled how great a location was to shoot from the Atlantic City side of the inlet. Boats coming in would be bouncing off some decent swells. So I proceeded to instruct everyone where I was to be and where they were to come by. All seemed like it would be ok. As I drove further south the weather improved. The sun was out and I thought that now I just needed to get to the end of the jetty at the inlet. Once arrived I find a Dredge Barge right smack in the middle of where I needed to shoot... Needless to say, it just wasn't my day for shooting...

I tried to make it up on Saturday morning as I risked getting out onto a finger jetty and waiting for a few hours while boats would come out a little at a time. As time went by the tide was rising. I was running out of time. By 1 PM I had to get out of there before I was washed out and lose all of my equipment.

I got a few pics and an air shot or two. Time will tell whether or not anyone will actually make a purchase.

OPA Sunny Isles, Fl. Offshore Race

Even though Edward Smith, the head of the Offshore Powerboat Association, has a full name, the only one he needs among the OPA faithful is “Smitty.” (He’s like Madonna and Prince that way.) When I caught with him yesterday before the Sunny Isles OPA race, he was busy getting his own “Wazzup” boats ready (he races one Fountain with his son Anthony in Super V and then Anthony races in another Activator as “Wazzup II” in Class 6 with younger son Nicholas) and overseeing the activity in the pits for the whole race.

“When people ask me how I run a race organization and also race, I tell them that’s why I run a race organization, so I can race,” he said.

Every event has a personality, most often a product of its location and promoters. This weekend’s Sunny Isles Beach Offshore Challenge is, well, sunny, and not just because it happens in North Miami in June. With deep regret as the news was published by Matt Trullio of "Speed on the Water.com POWERBOAT MAGAZINE has turned its last page. See the Full Story here: "Bonnier Acquires Powerboat—Powerboat Shelved"
Having many of Sharkey-Images published in POWERBOAT, we felt a part of it. Not as close though as the employees who worked on a daily basis for the magazine. It was a pleasure working with so many of them, I wish the very best for their future.

I am a believer in "When one door closes another one opens..." It isn't how, but when? I feel strongly that people are finding themselves in a new age of digital technology and we all need to learn to adapt to the new environment.
Online presence for anything is NOW!
The web needs CONTENT such as writers and photography... What I foresee is anything in Print such as magazines will die a slow death with the new digital pads that are starting to become very advanced and popular.
Magazines will most likely be as popular as cassette tapes in the near future. As much as I wish this was not to be the case, it is true.

Farewell POWERBOAT. It was certainly a milestone to be published in your magazine.

SPEED RACER "The Sequel"

Speed Racer is finished with its makeover just in time for the 2011 season. It no longer sports a rudder with surface drives.

The boat has been re-rigged with Mercury #6 Drives and is currently hitting the rev limiters at about 180 mph.

Owner Bob Christie couldn't be more pleased with how the boat is handling now. Especially with the new 2 Speed transmissions Bob states it is much easier to maneuver around the docks with the transmissions and no longer having the huge rudder .

Greenwood Lake APBA Spring Nationals

What a weekend at the APBA Races on Greenwood Lake, NJ!!!

The weather could have been better but the volunteers managed to get the races off on both days.

Sunday had a 1.5 hour delayed start due to fog.
They got a window of opportunity from about 1:30 to 4:30 and got all of the races in just in time for the next rain shower.

All in all, the weekend was a success.

Some key people I really need to thank is Anthony Rogasich and his entire family. They were the best hosts anyone could ever have.
Sean & Cathy Rice with all their efforts at the event and Paul "HOTBOAT" for an incredible meal he prepared for all of us at the end of the day on Saturday !!!

I would also like to thank the Lake Hopatcong group and the Greenwood Lake crew that all came together to make this happen.

I was glad not to have missed this event.

Met a lot of new great people from all over the country as well as Canada.

2011 Hudson River Spring Fun Run

This past weekend was the 1st splash for several boats after the horrible winter we all endured.
On Saturday May 7th, we launched out of Stony Point, NY to head south to NY Harbor for photo ops with the Lady Liberty herself. From there, we headed over to the Freedom Towers for use as a backdrop to the boats. Then onto the Empire State Building.

On Sunday we started all over again but this time we headed north to Kingston, NY.
Once again, we made several stops for some scenic backgrounds such as West Point Military Academy, Bannerman's Castle and the Light House at Round Out Creek.

Most images are now online, but we will be adding more as they are being processed.

The event kicked off with a Golf Tournament at the Toms River Country Club on Thursday leading into Friday morning where everyone met up at the Lobster Shanty for a great breakfast and Drivers Meeting. OPA 2010 OCEAN CITY GRAND PRIX

Ocean City, Md OPA Offshore Racing Series kicks off the 2010 Season with 33 Teams hitting the water.
Last minute preparations were being made by many teams and a few failed to make the start as the early season gremlins bit them hard.

Regardless, the weekend was action packed. Testing on Saturday where the seas were rough and the wind blowing hard made the excitement for the spectators watching the boats test.

Saturday night rolled around and some of the racers dropped their wrenches and headed to the local Go Cart track to face off in their very own Go Kart Challenge.

Team AMSOIL, Team Geico, Team ROCKSTAR and Steve Curtis from the Qatar Team all went at it full throttle with the Driver of Team Miss Geico, Marc Granet ending up in the WINNER'S CIRCLE. (All Photos Now Online)

Sunday morning came early. I started out with an early morning photo shoot of Ocean City.
From there moved onto the Driver's Meeting held at the coast Guard Station. It was a good time to display the latest products such as the Sharkey- Images' Neoprene Mats, and Polyester Banners. After the meeting i headed for the Marina hoping to catch a ride with the Start / Finish Boat. I succeeded. The boat ended up being the best seat in the house on the entire race course. I hope to shoot from there again in the future.

All races went off without incidents. It was a great weekend all the way around.
To top it all off, just before leaving Ocean City, I had to stop in for lunch our Sponsor's resturaunt, "Bull on the Beach" (also see photos).

Mahopac Marine's Spring Hudson River Run

We had the sunny skies we all had hoped for but with the winds creeping into the 20 knot range blowing down the river created a rough ride for most. Some boats called it quits by the time we had reached the Tappan Zee Bridge just about 18 miles into the run.
A blown water hose hose on the beautiful 39 MTI cut their ride short along with a few other boats that came to their assistance. One other boat on the return trip fell into a big hole and stopped them in their tracks, leaving part of the crew with some minor injuries but all reported to be doing ok.
The day was certainly a great time for all of us and was the perfect way to kick off the 2010 boating season.

FRISINI MOTOR SPORTS and PROROC MARINE TECHNOLOGIES had a great time at the DESERT STORM POKER RUN and SPEED TRIALS.

We elected to show up with the 36' Spectre Cat showing our new windshield - model outfitted with a couple of 900 HP engines, IMCO SCX upper drives and Mercury Racing Sportmaster lowers with Proroc #6 Prop Shafts and modified skegs as well as 16.5 X 40 Herring Props.

In the poker run we ran 160 + MPH filled with fuel and five people. After the poker run, we decided to run the radar shoot out which, everyone claimed was less than a mile but, we weren't concerned because all participants were required to perform the run in this manner in order for it to count. This gave us an excellent indicator of where we stood to the rest of the hardware present. We are very happy with the results. We managed to get three runs in. The best run was 138 MPH with a set of 16.5 X 36, 18 Degree Mercury props with only a mile to get to speed. The boat will run 170+ MPH.

The set up with the #6 shaft brings considerable speed to the boat due to the ability for higher X dimensions and lessened propeller slip, which reduces damaging harmonic vibration and extending drive life. Higher X dimensions not only reduce gear case drag, but also reduce the tendency to prematurely rock the boat over reducing the air volume entering the tunnel and increasing co-efficient of drag. This also works equally well on certain V bottoms. We currently have prop shafts available for the Konrad ACE drive which has a right hand and left hand prop shaft and #6 prop shaft for Mercury NXT drive which eliminates the twisting of the spacer coupling that aggressive drivers experience and the premature wear of the splines on the standard prop shaft.

Spectre Powerboats Revival

Truth be told, I was genuinely sad when Jay Pilini of Spectre Powerboats sold the molds for his high-performance catamarans and focused exclusively on building center-console fishing boats. First, Pilini and his crew built a great product—I’ve had the pleasure of helping test many of them during my tenure as a writer for Powerboat magazine. Second, Pilini has an engaging, understated personality and a dry sense of humor. He doesn’t talk much, but when he does it’s entertaining.

And within that 200-member tribe—and tribe is the right word for this totally bonded club—there’s no stronger member than Joe Nasso. That’s why NJPPC’s selection of Nasso 2009 Powerboater of the Year makes perfect sense.

Full disclosure: Nasso is a valued friend. Thanks to fellow NJPPC member Bob Christie—also a valued friend —I’ve been on a couple of poker runs with Nasso. I’ve also spent lots of time with him at events from the Miami International Boat Show to the Super Boat International Key West Offshore World Championships.

2009 Cambridge Offshore Hero Poker Run

What better way to spend a weekend in September?
Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association and Serious Offshore.com hosted a fantastic Poker Run on the Chesapeake Bay. This event was combined with the OPA Offshore race held on Sunday. Therefore the racers had the opportunity to join in on the fun. Fortunately for Louie "The Rigger" Giacontieri of Strictly Business Offshore Racing Team had the winning hand in the end.
